Finding strength in community and connection

Finding strength in community and connection

Coming from a remote Cape York community to walking across the stage at one of the best boarding schools in Queensland to receive a Queensland Certificate of Education, Genai Fa’Aoso’s journey is one of many experienced by Cape York Leaders Program students.

With limited schooling opportunities in the Cape, CYLP provides young kids a chance to get the best education possible while providing an extensive support network. The program is more than just financial assistance and includes tutoring and practical help with travel between home and school.

With determination and the support of Cape York Leaders Program (CYLP), Genai recently completed her schooling at The Cathedral School in Townsville.

The annual CYLP camps were a highlight for Genai, offering her a chance to reconnect with peers before each school year began. “It was always a good time,” she said. “Catching up with everyone who’s on the same journey was something I looked forward to every year.”

Throughout her schooling, CYLP played a critical role in keeping Genai on track. Genai admits there were times she considered dropping out but the support of CYLP helped her push through.

Graduating Year 12 holds a deep personal meaning for Genai because as an older sister, she wishes to lead by example and influence her younger brother to follow in her footsteps and finish school.

With her graduation behind her, Genai is focused on building her future and it looking to explore pathways in community service and health; two areas she feels passionate about and believes will make a real difference in her community.

Her long-term vision includes building a stable life – owning a car, a house, and feeling secure in her achievements. “I probably will go back home eventually,” she reflects, “but I want to stay out of the community for a while to see where I can go and how independent I can be.”

Like many Cape York leaders before her, completing Year 12 is just the first step in Genai’s journey. Successfully finishing school has equipped her with all of the necessary tools to pave the way for herself and open pathways that would’ve otherwise been out of reach.
