When Cape York Leaders Program (CYLP) student Shobi Salam walked through the gates of The Rockhampton Grammar School, she carried a dream: to one day return to her community and make a lasting difference. Fast-forward to today, and that dream has become a reality.
Shobi has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first female Indigenous Financial Counsellor to complete the internship at Cape York Partnership (CYP).
Shobi’s story began as a student in the Cape York Leaders Program (CYLP), where she graduated from The Rockhampton Grammar School in 2021 after six years of boarding school from Year 7 to Year 12.
Inspired by her experience in the CYLP, Shobi joined CYP in 2023 as a Financial Counsellor Intern. Over the course of 18 months, she completed her Diploma of Financial Counselling while working with First Nations communities across Mossman, Aurukun, Coen, Hope Vale, and Lockhart River. Her role focused on supporting individuals experiencing financial hardship, a challenge she has approached with compassion and commitment.
“During my senior year of high school, I knew I wanted to come back home and work in my community,” Shobi said.
The opportunity to attend boarding school gave me a vision of how I could contribute to addressing the challenges we face

Shobi’s new qualification is not just a personal milestone but a broader success story for her community. Her work helps individuals navigate complex financial issues, empowering families and creating pathways to greater financial security.
In addition to her professional achievements, Shobi has also achieved personal goals such as purchasing her first brand-new car which is a testament to her hard work and dedication.
“Being a Financial Counsellor means so much to me,” she said. “It’s about more than just supporting people with their finances; it’s about advocating for my community and helping create lasting change. I look forward to continuing this work and growing in my role.”
Shobi’s journey is an example of how CYLP can foster Indigenous talent and create meaningful opportunities for community development. Her success is a testament to the importance of investing in First Nations people to lead and make a difference.
